As each country prepares to reach their zero carbon emissions agreement (some maybe slower than others after Rishi Sunak’s devastating ‘green policy’), we have meat-based pet food manufacturers panicking. Category 3 animal fat – the byproducts of the meat industry from chicken fat and calf suet that is used in almost every meat-based pet food, is also very valuable to the renewable diesel market.

This fat can be used in biodiesel for the transport industry which has grown in popularity tenfold since 2006. Tax credits are provided to those using these ingredients for fuel production instead of pet food as it means less use of fossil fuels.

Supermarket shelves of meat-based dog food looking very bare!
This means that all meat-based pet food prices could soar or just not be made as the primary concern with the meat-based pet food market is profit.

This delights all of us actively promoting plant-based dog food made from sustainable sources and made to enhance the health of our pets rather than feed them the byproducts of the meat-based industry. Imagine supermarket shelves full of plant-based dog food? A dream come true!

What a huge impact that would have on the health of our pets as well as on the environment….and we haven’t even begun to consider the cruelty free aspect which is at the heart of why so many of us choose not to feed our dogs other animals.

I have to agree with Cockapoo’s Pru’s Mum who has commented as saying – “It is awful to think that ‘man’ will exploit animals to use their fat for biofuel… We really do live in such a cruel and barbaric time where farm animals are concerned. I wish for a vegan future”

What recent developments have we seen in the plant-based pet food space?

Prof Andrew Knight publishes a research paper this week showing that cats too can be healthier on a plant-based diet!

Our wonderful Prof Andrew Knight has done it again with his research that is based on animal welfare and pet health rather than receiving any investment from pet food companies. He did the same with all his research into vegan dog food  – no other pet food has received so much intensive and positive research as he has done.

Edgard & Cooper partners with Deliciously Ella

Edgard & Cooper are a primarily meat-based company who have chosen to be as sustainable as possible with 2 plant-based dry foods. They have recently partnered with Deliciously Ella which is such a positive move as the Deliciously Ella products are so well recognised in the human space, and this further promotes plant-based dog foods.

The Pack launches an oven-bake biscuit

The Pack launched the very first vegan oven bake biscuits this month. They are made from quality ingredients and include peanut butter for palatability, so ideal for fussy dogs but not ideal for those prone to putting on weight. We will have their new food available as sample packs to treat your dog to their high quality ingredients – watch this space!

Omni produce a tinned food

This month, Omni launched a tinned food that they promote as being highly palatable with ‘meat-like chunks’. Their tinned food contains soya protein, wheat flour, cornflour and barley sugars so not ideal for any dogs with intolerances to these ingredients or sensitive dogs who react to high protein levels (we have chosen to exclude these ingredients in all the foods that we sell). Ideal though for very fussy dogs as these ingredients would make the food very palatable.
We do applaud Omni for using their large marketing budget to consistently advertise and promote vegan dog food through their brand – we are very thankful for this.

VegDog expands its range

VegDog are one of the biggest vegan dog food companies in Germany. Having met the Director Tessa who started VegDog with a desire to have a healthier diet for her rescue dog Nelson, it is understandable that it would succeed as the driving factor behind the company is health, not profit. See this latest article about how quickly it is growing with supermarket shelves in Germany now stocking the delicious Green Crunch that we import and stock for your dogs.

Scrumbles food appears on Sainsbury shelves

It is always so positive to hear that plant-based foods are appearing on supermarket shelves as this makes it closer to becoming ‘the norm’ for shoppers to see plant-based dog food options. We applaud Scrumbles for getting into supermarkets, but our big concern is the quality of their food. They are primarily meat-based and have not formulated their wet food accurately. They do not mention the addition of Taurine or Methionine in the ingredients and the protein level on a dry matter basis is therefore very low at just 17.4% (minimum for dogs is 18%).

Butternut Box have 2 plant-based options

We are mentioning Butternut Box as a success even though they produce fresh ‘human grade’ food. The effect of using human grade meat-based food for our pets is a climate disaster as it gives a small dog a greater carbon footprint than a man with the consumption of meat at every meal.

We were thrilled when they produced a plant-based option in 2022 and a second one this year. We heard this week that they have received a staggering eye-watering amount of £280million in investment to spread into Europe and beyond. We so hope that a large portion of this funding will go towards promoting their plant-based food fully as one of the 2 Directors who started Butternut Box is vegetarian!

And what about Just be Kind? WE'VE KEPT THE BEST FOR LAST!

We are due to launch our own food next month that has taken us 2 years to formulate and we couldn’t be more excited. We only want the best for your dogs and having worked with so many of you with your dogs with sensitivities and health concerns, we have chosen a recipe that is so natural and filled with wholefood goodness.
Watch this space and read what Pepe’s Dad sent us below when Pepe and George tried our new food!!!

“Hi Arielle,
I’ve rarely seen the boys eat so enthusiastically and, what’s more, like so many dogs, they can be rather fussy eaters!
Well done. When will it be available, please?”
– Pepe and George’s Dad in Worthing
