Did you know that we share the same gut microbiome as our dogs? What a pleasure it was to share this information when I was invited to speak amongst plant-based doctors at this year’s Vegfest event in London.

With this knowledge, it makes so much sense that we then see the same reduction in signs of chronic inflammation and auto-immune conditions in our dogs when both us and our dogs follow a nutritionally complete wholefood plant-based diet.

Dr Arielle speaking at Vegfest London amongst plant-based doctore all about how we share the same gut microbiome as our dogs

What is the main function of the gut microbiome in our dogs?

A wide diversity of plants will create a healthy gut microbiome. The role of the microbiome is so important to:
  • Digest food to feed the good bacteria.
  • Regulate your dog’s immune systems.
  • Tweaking their brain chemistries through the chemicals they produce.
The diversity of gut microbes gives your dog a diversity of healthy chemicals, a healthier immune system and better metabolism.
The bacteria, fungi, and viruses in their guts can be likened to a kind of inner chemical plant. Dogs’ bodies only produce 20-odd gut hormones or chemicals. Gut microbes produce thousands. They break down food into small amounts, use the contents, and produce lots of signalling compounds. The signalling compounds send constant messages to their immune systems. 70% of your dog’s immunity is regulated by gut flora!

Gut bacteria also produce brain chemicals, such as serotonin. as well as additional molecules that control how their bodies change food into energy. This has implications in overweight pets as shown below.

A study by Luis Pedro Coelho, found that dogs have a similar gut microbiome to humans.
Dr Coelho explains:
“These findings suggest that we could potentially use data from dogs to study the impact of diet on gut microbiome in humans, and humans could be a good model to study the nutrition of dogs.”

Wonderful – for once we could be used as the ‘guinea pigs’ for our dog’s nutrition!!

This makes feeding a wholefood plant-based diet to your dog that is properly supplemented even more important to feed the gut bacteria naturally, or add in Give A Dog A Bean to your dog’s diet as it is the only plant-based dog food where you can visually see the vegetables and diversity that you are feeding to your pet. It contains a unique blend of Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans, Hemp Seeds, Faba Bean Protein, Carrots, Pumpkin Seeds, Papaya, Sunflower Seeds, Blueberries, Kidney Beans, Safflower Oil, Quinoa, Kale, Psyllium Husks and Algae – all natural and all so effective for your dog’s health by feeding their gut microbiome effectively.
