Scrumbles Wet Veg Food

Scrumbles wet veg food

Scrumbles are an independent UK based company that makes primarily meat-based dog foods with their unique selling point being the addition of probiotics to their foods plus the addition of slippery elm for dogs with digestive issues. They did contact me at Just be Kind to promote their Scrumbles veggie treats, but I chose not to explaining to them that slippery elm use was not sustainable as it damages the elm tree by removing the bark as shown here.

In January 2023, they released a vegan wet food. They are moving in the right direction trying to be more sustainable, but this new food can only really be used for dogs that are going to eat both their meat-based as well as their new veggie recipe as the new recipe is so low in protein with many essential amino acids lacking.

Here are the ingredients and analysis of their new food –

Lentils 4%, Chickpeas 4%, Peas 4%, Sweet potato 4%, Red Kidney Beans 2%, Apple 2%, Carrots 2%, White potato 2%, Vegetable Oil, Minerals, Seaweed, Herbs (Oregano, Marjoram, Sage), Blueberries, Slippery Elm 0.1%. 108kcal/100g

Analytical Info

Protein 5%*, Fat Content 2.5%, Crude Fibre 0.5%, Inorganic Matter 2.5%, Moisture 72%, Phosphorous 0.71%

Please note that the protein level of this food on a dry matter basis with *5% protein as formulated, is equivalent to 17.4% on a dry matter basis – this is below the recommended protein level for all dog foods of 18%

The nutritional info of this food shows no addition of extra amino acids such as taurine, methionine, arginine etc which would explain why the protein level is so low. For this reason, we would not recommend this food as the sole source of a dog’s diet if on a 100% plant-based diet, and definitely not as a maintenance diet for puppies (which they recommend on their site).
