Little Igi the Cockapoo suffered from recurrent bouts of anal gland infections. Her very concerned Mum contacted me as she was being given yet another course of antibiotics to help clear the infection, as well as having to have them regularly squeezed.
It was happening so often (and was always so painful with each visit to have them expressed), and their vet had begun talking about having the glands removed.
This is the final step to take with dogs with constant anal gland issues, but it doesn’t come without its risks. There is always the concern that you could end up with an incontinent dog which is the worst case to consider!
Igi was meat-based until her Mum transitioned her onto soya-based vegan dog food Omni. She is a typical Cockapoo and is very fussy with her food. She went off Omni and still had anal gland issues. Her Mum became so concerned about the possibility of surgery, that she booked our Just be Kind Package to get as much help as she could with Igi. Here are her words –
“I wanted to send a little update on how Igi was doing since trying the different foods in the sample box. We started her on Greta and ordered a big bag which she liked, and there was some improvement in her loose stools, although they weren’t as firm as we were hoping for, so we then tried Solo Vegetal.
We can’t believe how brilliant her stools are on this, it’s been a real relief! Her first poo of the day is always beautifully formed and firm. Sometimes her stools later in the day are a bit softer, but still formed.
And her recurrent anal gland infections appear to be a thing of the past (we hope), so we’ve managed to avoid having to go down the surgical route to remove them. She’ll probably always need them expressed every few months, as this was an issue even before she went plant-based, but we can manage that.
Thank you so much for all your help and guidance, and for ensuring there are so many great plant based food options available for our pups!”
SO good to hear and we are really pleased too that there are so many plant-based options for all our pups:)
