The new year always holds such promise and hope that we will do things differently and change our behaviours from the previous year. The main thing that most of us want to change about ourselves, is what we eat and how much we eat as we all know that being healthy means losing that extra round girth!
I have to confess that this is the very first year in such a very long time that I stood on the scales and amazingly found myself to be lighter than I’ve ever been now that I follow a low FODMAP vegan wholefood diet – hoorah – I am eating exactly the same foods as I recommend you feed your dogs that Ruff and I eat!!:)
It is only in my 50’s that I am finally able to control my weight and my IBS and everything that I have learnt about my own vegan nutrition has come from helping you feed your dog a balanced plant-based diet! My entire journey 5 years ago started with my desire to help owners feed their pets more kindly as the obesity epidemic in our pets really upset me.
Everything that I have learnt on my journey about nutrition has been fascinating – for both us and our dogs, as every aspect of a wholefood plant-based diet for us and our dogs ensures that we feed our gut bacteria correctly. This is the basis of maintaining a healthy weight for all of us. Did you know that if you were treated with antibiotics as a child which would have disrupted your good bacteria, you are far more likely to suffer from obesity and diabetes as an adult?!
Studies that have been done on obesity in humans have used dogs as a study material and in particular, the gut microbiome of dogs as we share the same gut bacteria as our dogs!!!
Carrying extra fat means extra cells, which makes you and your dog more prone to cancer as there is more chance statistically of the extra cells mutating and changing into cancer cells. Very simply too, fat cells release their own hormones that result in overall inflammation in the body that either causes extra arthritic pain in your dog, or it affects the delicate balance of hormones in the body that can result in a suppression of the immunity and all sorts of allergic conditions can develop. Inflammation also results in a greater risk of cancer which is why I am so determined to sort out my IBS and the IBD and allergies of SO many of your dogs.
Healthy, natural plant-based is the best way to control this!
