What an exciting change to be writing this article! 2 years ago I wrote all about claims that a grain-free dog food diet that replaced the grains with pea protein or other legumes was being blamed for a rise in cases seen of Dilated Cardiomyopathy in dogs.
This directly affected how vets and the public viewed vegan dog food as the main protein source tends to come from protein rich legumes and peas in particular.
Thankfully with this knowledge of a possible link between the amino acid Taurine (and its precursor Methionine) lacking when grains are removed from a dog food diet, all good quality vegan dog food diets have the addition of these 2 amino acids to prevent any concerns. They are expensive to add so not all diets will add them in…particularly the grain free meat-based cheaper ‘supermarket’ diets that can be particularly harmful to the long term health of dogs!
But now, we have even further good news published in December 2022!! The Food Standards Agency in America who published the original findings, now claim that they have insufficient data to establish the cause of the DCM case reports and pet food products eaten by the affected dogs.
Peas and legumes are now no longer implicated as being a possible cause of DCM in dogs, as the increased knowledge has resulted in foods being properly supplemented so no further cases are being noticed…nutritionally sound vegan dog food is safe and healthy for your dog – such great news!!
