“There’s no such things as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.”
– Scott Adams
The name of this business JUST BE KIND came from when I attended a Vet Festival in June 2019. I had only been vegan for such a short time and I had set up a very crude website Blogging about my experience of turning myself vegan as a vet purely to find the best vegan food for our family dog Ruff!!
A lecture given by Dr David Hamilton on kindness gave me the inspiration for the name and I remember listening so intently to his wonderful talk all about the side effects of kindness (he has written books), and then rushing afterwards to tell him how inspired I felt and how I had to start a business called JUST BE KIND!
What followed went way past all my expectations as I threw myself into the fascinating and inspiring world of veganism and veterinary nutrition. I have always believed that veganism and kindness are so inextricably linked and is the entire driving force behind everything that I do. I feel so passionately about this that I spoke at the Apollo in London at a live event about this very topic. The talk can be heard here.
I have followed my instincts with every decision made as like you, I just want the best for my own dog, so all I sell or promote is what I feed him and know that he loves and it provides everything for him.
Why JUST BE KIND Shop now sells Fleetful Recipe Kits and Umameo Treat Packs
When I first started promoting vegan dog food in 2019, I used to make up ‘Umameo treats’ (named after the highly processed ‘Boneo’ treats that all the vet practices I worked at used to have on the counter for visiting dogs!) SO many dogs suffer from intolerances and I realised that these homemade vegan Umameo treats were ideal in that they had no wheat, no animal products and I do remember…dogs in the consulting room just LOVED them! They are made from a combination of hemp protein and mixed with tahini paste and then baked – irresistible to dogs and highly nutritious!
I would diligently roll these into shapes – hearts or paws and even though it took me hours to make, I so badly wanted pet owners to see how much their dogs could love vegan food. This had to stop as the act of baking and moulding in our small kitchen, and then packaging and posting was taking up so much of my precious time and stopping me from promoting plant-based food,,,,but we all have to start our passions from somewhere in our kitchen!
The lovely Holly from Fleetful took over the Umameo treat side of the business and although she doesn’t make up the treats, she sells the packs of highly nutritious proteins to make up the same delicious Umameos. It made perfect sense to add all her products – her delicious easy to make recipe kits as well as her protein packs to the JUST BE KIND shop. We had an Instagram live which we recorded about the addition of Fleetful products to the JUST BE KIND shop. It explains more about my choices for the shop if you wanted to have a listen and meet the lovely Holly.
