How fortunate am I that Fudge’s Mum booked a teleconsult to discuss his vegan dog food diet as I got to meet this darling little dog and watch him roll his toy around the room and jump onto the soft sofa as we spoke about him 🙂

He is 18 years old and still looks and acts like a puppy…what is his secret?

He was rescued at the age of 13, and he has been on a plant-based diet for the last 4 years, and a wholefood homemade and supplemented diet lovingly made by his Mum for the last 2 years!

Plus, he is really fortunate to have a white square muzzle which means that he will never go grey and always look like a puppy!!

But it is seeing in him action in his home, licking his Mum as she held him up to the screen for me and noticing that he has no cataracts clouding his bright eyes and can still play and jump that is all remarkable. We do know that from published research in the US and Canada and in the UK that dogs will live longer on a vegan balanced diet, well Fudge is a perfect example!

What does 18 year old Fudge eat?

Here are his Mum’s words – “Fudge is generally in great health and our usual local vet is really surprised at how alert he is. His hearing isn’t great but he does so well for his age – usually wanting two walks a day!

I home cook for him using the Just be Kind chart/similar charts and topping with Just be Kind supplement plus Algae oil and mushrooms for Vit D. I also crush Vit C as well into the topper before mixing into a paste.

He’s very selective of what he likes – he doesn’t really like any fruit (apart from in a smoothie sometimes). Loves sweet potato, peas, beans, quite a lot of veg too. He is back to liking peanut butter now. I also give crushed pumpkin seeds and  golden paste too.

I have started giving him peanut butter in a Kong for something interesting, and Benevo rumble strips as well (he loves those).
The only concern he has is a collapsing trachea. Vet put him on Lomotil which has helped the coughing so much. Occasionally he gets flare ups but most the time only coughs a few times a day now. It’s been a life saver! “

I was able to advise on foods that he really needed to have everyday that are folate and anti-oxidant rich such as fresh cooked kale, quinoa and added goji berries or blueberries (blended into a smoothie with oat or almond milk).

The very first Plant-Based Dog Nutrition Course will answer all those important queries about feeding elderly dogs. Little Fudge is a perfect example of how to do it well as he is so healthy and happy at 18 years old!
