I have had the pleasure of meeting both Melissa and Steve before when I spoke about how veganism and kindness were so inextricably linked at the Apollo theatre in April, and they came to listen to my talk. They were feeding their much-loved chocolate brown Labrador Bear a plant-based diet with help from the Just be Kind site, and they had just embarked on their journey of starting a vegan business with Vegan Muscle Gymwear.
They are a couple that I feel so happy to have met twice as goodness and kindness just radiates from both of them! They had their very first stand for their gymwwear business at the recent Vegfest in London and I was thrilled to meet them yet again. They are both the muscliest people that I have had the pleasure of being photographed with (apart from when I hugged James Wilks from Gamechangers fame๐ Both proof of the power of health when on a 100% plant-based diet!
They live their new business tagline THE STRONG PROTECT THE WEAK. They chose to rescue battery chickens just a few months ago. They built an entire construction in their garden to house them, while still allowing them room to be free range. I was fascinated with their story of how these tortured hens arrived having never seen daylight or space or grass before (see the video below), and how they now had the most wonderful routine now of looking out for each other.
Steve told me how he watches them in the evening going into their roost one by one. He knows them all by name. They would enter alone, sing a little song, check that it was safe and then settle down for the night. The next hen would follow, enter, sing a little song, and settle for the night…and each one would do the same ritual every night! I LOVED hearing this. Perfect chicken behaviour as they work together to protect each other, but with the careful support and attention of this dedicated couple, they are now leading the happiest of lives:)
How we love this short video they sent us of their darling Bear…..we all agree with him hugely!!
