I remember the time so well in March when I said to my son that Alexis Conran the TV presenter was visiting our home to do a TV documentary about ‘dog poo’ and he wanted to go walking with me and Ruff and find out about vegan dogs and their poo!! My son Chris did a quick search on his phone and replied with amazement ‘But he’s famous – I’ve watched his programmes before…and he’s coming to our house?!’
As a family we were SO excited to welcome a TV crew and the very dashing Alexis Conran into our home in April. A day we won’t forget as a family. My daughters made everyone sandwiches as they stayed so long and never took a break.
Vegan Vet Arielle is interviewed by Alexis Conran for Channel 5 in April 2022 for a programme called ‘Dog Poo Wars’ – see full post here
I absolutely loved taking them on our favourite walk (we had so many cuts as people walking their own dogs would appear so we had to start from the beginning!!), and I could have spoken all day about my favourite topic – vegan dog food (even though the programme really was just about dog poo)!
My main focus was to try and hammer home the dangers of raw feeding and I mentioned it over and over again about the environmental dangers of raw fed dogs shedding antibiotic resistant bacteria in their poo and if left in the environment, could cause such a danger to our planet (not to mention to us and our pets).
Alexis did confess that he had fed his own dog Gelmer a raw food diet in the past, so he did not really want to mention raw feeding at all (sadly). He confessed that he did get very badly trolled on social media by people after all of his programmes so he stayed away from mentioning raw feeding altogether in the final programme.
I still felt so fortunate that I had this opportunity and they had contacted me and not a different dog food company as it gave such different exposure to plant-based feeding and it was perceived in a positive light.
(I am just SO excited that the programme has ended up being saved and classed as a documentary on Imdb – my Dad thinks it’s so funny that his daughter is now a renowned ‘dog poo expert’ 😂)
Alexis Conran and Arielle Griffiths doing a crazy experiment
But, the most exciting bit of all, came when I put up a post about Alexis’ latest Channel 5 programme where he visited a sheep milking farm. I hadn’t given a very kind review about the entire programme as it did not concentrate at all on health and sustainability….but Alexis Conran must have read the post as the day it went out, Just Be Kind received an order of 10kgs Solo Vegetal for his dog Gelmer!
I e-mailed him just to make sure I wasn’t treading on any toes by publishing this as what we all feed our dogs is a very personal decision (as we all know!!), but he sent such a kind reply –
Hi Arielle,
Lovely to hear from you. Yes, absolutely go ahead and put it on your website.Gelmer is very happy. He also gets plant-based cooked food from Butternut Box and he seems to be doing fine. He does get the occasional bit of meat/ fish and chicken but he’s pretty much meat free 80%. I find this keeps him very happy. All the best to you,Alexis
Wow! From a dog that was raw fed, to now be 80% plant-based is such great news and well done Alexis!! I do remember sending him home after his long day spent with me in April, with a large bag of Greta dry food…..it definitely paid off for Gelmer’s health 🙂
