Our Supersprouts Family Recipe
Our SUPERSPROUTS RECIPE is possibly one of the most nutritious of all our recipes! Depending on your dog’s weight, our recipe makes enough for 6 days, 3 days or 2 days and we have included the amounts to feed below when batch cooking.
Why sprouts for your vegan dog?
Most legumes that are used as a protein source in plant-based diets such as chickpeas and lentils contain a relatively high amount of phytic acid (phytates) that inhibits the absorption of valuable vitamins, iron and calcium from the intestine. To reduce the levels of phytic acid when lentils or other legumes are eaten, it is very important to soak and rinse them before cooking; or ideally sprout the lentils easily on your window sill as this reduces the phytates even more!
Sprouting the seeds is really simple. Soak 1 tbsp alfalfa seeds for a day in a sprouting jar or 2 tbsp lentil seeds. After 24 hours place the sprouting jar on a dish so water can drain and rinse sprouts twice daily. Do not expose to sunlight (cover with a teacloth) and use them for the recipe after 2-3 days of sprouting. Sprouted alfalfas are full of calcium and protein, and sprouted lentils are the healthiest way to eat lentils (for us too). Tinned and drained lentils can also be substituted in this recipe if you have no sprouted lentils.

If cooking large quantities
If you are cooking for a large dog or a number of dogs, it is advisable to omit the baking of the food in the recipe shown above to make it easier for you. This means that you will be feeding the food once it has been boiled and blended or mashed together.
As dogs do not like the consistency of mashed food (similar to the consistency of mushy peas), to make it more palatable, we advise adding in AGAR AGAR powder that gives the food a slimy consistency, like tinned dog food. It is a healthy addition as it is fibre and adds to the essential gut microflora. It is made up by mixing 15g powder per 1kg cooked food that is boiled and allowed to cool and can then be mixed into the food. The nutrient rich ‘icing’ can then be added to the top of the food, or also mixed in, but ensure that the food is cold when added to retain vital nutrients.
