We are now told that when dealing with the public or going out in public places; we have to wear a mask and here are some things that I experienced while doing vet work yesterday dealing with the public and any emergency cases that came to the surgery:
They frighten dogs! When we greet the dogs at the door to collect them from the owner, they cannot read our facial expression and one muzzled and very frightened poor elderly Boxer barked at me until I pulled the mask down.
They are uncomfortable to wear and just don’t feel natural on your face.
They make you feel strangely cut off from reality and distant from people you are trying to communicate with. Some clients wouldn’t even speak to me – they just left their dogs at the door and left quickly to phone me from the safety of their cars.
You become suddenly aware of your own breathing as they fog up glasses and you can smell your own breath!
They have a strange smell! The ones we use are sterilised at the practice and luckily it smelt of popcorn, but they also seem to absorb smells and I could get a hint of the receptionists curry lunch that she had just eaten and heated up in the microwave and it was an hour after lunch!
Gorgeous Mumble just didn’t mind at all that I had a mask on thankfully!
